The fashion industry in Poland was, unfortunately, born during their communist era. Despite fighting a forced political regime, extensive censorship, and a lack of natural resources, Polish designers such as Grażyna Hase, Lola Prusac, and Zyga Pianko rose to popularity and shed light on the idea of escapism through fashion-a new and radical concept that empowered many underprivileged citizens at the time. This resulted in many fashion influences taking inspiration from traditionally Polish trends, such as urban folk design and black embroidery.
These aesthetics were even more popularized after Yves Saint Laurent’s 1976 Autumn/Winter Collection; known as his Russian Collection, his designs featured beautiful elongated silhouettes, layered traditional-looking skirts, and folk-like patterned blouses with notable sleeves.
